The Agents Licensing Section performs licensing for all lines of insurance for individuals and business entities, and tracking functions for the entire Bureau of Insurance. The section screens applications, issues agent/agency licenses, tracks appointments, processes appointment renewals, monitors regulatory requirements for licensing, and responds to all informational requests about agents. There are approximately 175,000 insurance agents, 1,500 insurance companies, and 12,000 insurance agencies doing business in Virginia.

The Agents Licensing Section processes applications for licensure in date received order. Please allow a minimum of 15 business days for processing before contacting the Bureau concerning the status of an application.

      Nonresident agents who comply with their home state requirement need only take a two-hour Virginia specific course to meet the requirement in Virginia.
