Coverage for Children - A new law prohibits insurers from denying coverage for a child younger than age 19 on the basis that the child has a pre-existing condition, and another new law requires the option to add your adult children to your family coverage.

Guaranteed Issue - Two insurers in Virginia have been designated as the insurer of last resort and must offer health coverage to citizens of the Commonwealth: CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (for residents in the Northern Virginia area) and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The Bureau offers a listing of all companies offering individual health or dental coverage in Virginia.

Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) - The federal government operates a Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan in Virginia for people with a pre-existing condition who have been uninsured for at least 6 months. Information on this plan can be found at: www.pcip.gov
